This former California girl loves the crisp sweater weather and gorgeous colors of a perfect fall New England weekend. An easy ninety minute drive from NYC, The Mayflower Inn & Spa offers a perfect escape during these crazy times.
Auberge Luxury In A Cozy Country Setting:
I love the cozy country chic vibe of NYC designer Celerie Kemble‘s recent renovation of The Mayflower. Our Premium Guest Room had an extremely comfortable canopied bed and pretty views of the Inn’s stunning Shakespeare Garden. Now a part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, the service throughout the property was extremely warm yet professional. Most importantly, we felt the Inn was as peaceful and relaxing as ever, while also being clean, safe and promoting social distancing and mask wearing.
Farm-Fresh Yet Sophisticated:
With iconic NYC chef April Bloomfield at the helm, we enjoyed delicious meals at the elegant Garden Room and more casual Tap Room without ever having to leave the property. Featuring farm-fresh New England fare, I especially loved our tasty outdoor breakfasts overlooking the gardens, and sophisticated dinner options (favorites include Cauliflower Tikka Marsala and Fried Chicken). Litchfield County also offers a lot of great dining. We had an incredible outdoor dinner at Community Table, a short 15 minute drive from the Inn. Featuring numerous fire pits and cozy chairs covered with sheep skins, we loved the Nibbles (nuts, truffle popcorn and olives in glass jars which they refilled and packed up to go), Farm Kale Tartine (my favorite), and House Made Cavatelli. We also had a yummy casual dinner of great burgers and wings at the charming White Horse Country Pub. Note: The Mayflower Inn’s dining hours are currently restricted and seating limited, so plan accordingly.
Spa, Hike, Repeat:
No trip to The Mayflower would be complete without a visit to their gorgous spa. The spa has put a lot of effort into giving guests a great experience despite the obvious challenges. We had excellent massages (with masked therapists) and a previously booked private hour in the luxurious indoor pool and whirlpool (which I honestly preferred over sharing!!). We really missed our usual pre and post treatment visits to my favorite relaxation room which was sadly closed due to social distancing restrictions. To work off the Inn’s decadent meals (and cocktails), guests still have access to the well-appointed fitness center (love the Peloton bikes) and short but scenic on property hike. For better views and more steps, I highly recommend a hike in the nearby Steep Rock Preserve, whose summit features breathtaking fall foliage views (and at 776 feet offers great trails to get your heart rate up).
Of course it’s also great to go to The Mayflower to relax on the charming porch in a comfy wicker chair, drink in hand, doing absolutely nothing at all . . .
